Home Remodeling Photo Album: Sauna Spa in Cave Creek
Originally this was an old, dilapidated shed, and a perfect spot for something more attractive! Look at the transformation of the old shed to what is now a sauna and bunkhouse. This was meticulously designed, and every line and texture has a certain purpose. Some of the lines and products are an extension of the main house. You'll see that there are some walls at an angle. Same with the roof lines. That, too, is purposeful. Especially notable is the Finnish flag subtly designed into the wall when you first walk into the dressing room. To some, it may not even be noticeable as the Finnish flag, but rather looks like a nice accent in the wall. Only once you realize all the sentiment behind much of the sauna do you see the flag. Enjoy the tour! BEFORE
Even the tree speaks
The location of the sauna was determined in relation to the tree. The angled tree stump added a great dimension to the structure.
Sauna Interior
The sauna walls and ceiling are made of cedar. The continuous grain of the wood wraps around the corners. When you turn the sauna on, you can smell the soft fragrance of cedar even from a distance away from the sauna building itself. Notice the low lighting, too. Traditional saunas have low light or maybe even just a faint candle light. This adds to the ambiance and relaxation of the entire sauna experience. The sauna bucket is handcrafted in Finland and a traditional piece of any Finnish sauna.
An open feeling
The designer wanted there to be a feeling of openness between the sauna and the shower, so he put in a glass wall.
Multiple Shower Fixtures
The shower has multiple showering heads to allow for more than one person to shower at the same time. The faucets are Kohler Purist. The shower also has a seamless entry from the steam room to the shower. The floor tile is Reside Ash from Arizona Tile.
A cute little toilet room
The bathroom has barn door on the inside. The walls are a continuation of the Angela Harris Inspira Light Silver 24x48 Porcelain Tile that is in the dressing room. The countertop is Taj Mahal Quartzite.
A Perfect Spot to Cool Off
This is a perfect spot to cool off after a nice, hot sauna regardless of the time of year. The fireplace continues the serene ambiance of the sauna and the misters from MistAmerica offer a nice way to cool off.
Outdoor Fireplace
The patio fireplace is just a few steps away from the sauna. Stone is Natural Quartzite. Color is Honey. The mantle is tile that look like walnut wood. The fireplace from Arizona Fireplaces is a ventless fireplace so all the heat comes out the front. Each rock is individually shaped to fit the stack. Mortar is put between each rock to give a very strong structural quality, but yet it appears to be mortarless.
Beautiful Texture
The tile is Dunes Wave Ivory from Arizona Tile. The floor tile is Reside Ash, non-slip.
The bunk house
From the back, you can see the bunkhouse. Notice the lines of the roof.
Sauna Spa and Bunk House
This is a sauna and bunk house, a welcome haven in the desert. It was originally an old shed. The post is made of natural quartzite stone. The wood look facade is cultured stone. Notice the copper facia with pine tongue and groove soffit. The tree was there before, so the facia was angled along the side to keep the tree as an added touch.

The stove is a Finnleo Himalaya stove with a boiling option that really gives a moist, gentle steam effect. Space was used efficiently with angled benches to gain as much comfort as possible. These nice, long benches allow for a person to lie down and relax while taking in steam.
The dressing room
Lots of hooks for lots of kids! This works well for hanging wet swimming suits or towels. It doesn't matter if it gets wet because the walls and floor are tiles. The door is Pella fiberglass with an oak charcoal finish.
Beautiful tile walls
The tile work on the walls is gorgeous. At first, you don't even notice it, but then when you look at it a little closer, you can tell that it's a Finnish flag. This subtle design was purposeful, and a mark of the heritage of the sauna and where it came from. The word "sauna" (sow-Nah) is a Finnish word, and its tradition goes back many, many years. The bench has a nice waterfall edge that gives it the simple, clean lines. The wood on the bench brings warmth to an otherwise tile room. The gray tile is a porcelain tile, the white tile is Angela Harris Inspira Light Silver 24x48 Porcelain Tile, the blue tile is Angela Harris Inspira Oxide 12x24 Porcelain Tile.
